Cote Azure, French Riviera

Cassis, France~ Plage du Bestouan• moxiblog.com

Our trip to the South of France would not be complete with out a day at the beach. We chose to visit Cassis, and unspoiled fishing village just east of Marseille and about an hour south of where we were staying. I told the kids a very abbreviated version of the Count of Monte Cristo to add some interest to the location (it’s in the general vicinity). Cassis is quite a popular spot to catch tourist boats and visit the near-by national park .  It is home to stunning steep limestone cliffs and tiny near calanques ~coves that have white beaches. Unfortunately the boats are only for viewing the coves and passing on, passengers are not allowed to get off and on, or stay for a day at one of these beautiful beaches. The only way to explore the beaches is by boat, and we tried to rent one but it was completely booked. The rental boat companies (there are 2 that I found) suggested reservations at least a week in advance. There are boats available in all categories and price ranges, some for the unlicensed day or half-day tourist, and some larger- faster- more expensive yacht style vessels complete with a captain. The companies were friendly, helpful and spoke English. My research suggested that Loca Bato was the least expensive and most helpful. Another fun suggestion would be to rent Kayaks, maybe when the kids are older?  Next time we visit Cassis the Calanques are a must!

Cassis has 2 beach areas in town, one at the very center waters edge, and the one we choose is rockier Plage du Bestouan (I figured it had to be good since it had best in the name )~ just to the west about 15 minutes walk. I tried hard not to include too many topless ladies in these photos, but be warned they are at every beach in Europe. It makes for interesting conversations with children who have been trained to keep their clothes on. Design mom did a great job covering this topic, if your interested ( I highly recommend) click here and make sure you read the conversation in the comments- it’s where the real insight is.

This is not the sandy beach we are used to, but it was really cool. The stones were smooth and shiny and it was nice in the end not to have sand sticking to everyone.

love my kids dad

Watching my kids dad play with him, makes me love them even more.

The city is quaint with scattered boutiques and shops that are fun to explore. Market is twice weekly and is quite big with the traditional food items but also a large selection of clothes, bags, sandals, hats and other must-haves.

These tiny little sailboats tethered together crossed our waterfront in the afternoon.
They appeared to be a children’s sailing class out for practice.

After some long spring months of brutal cold and dreary-ness, I wanted to cry when I saw palm trees.
